Darren Fletcher can leave MU for Free Transfer

Darren Fletcher reached an amicable agreement with Manchester United that allowed him to leave the club for a free transfer. Fletcher had been at United since the start of his career, but it became clear that he was no longer in the plans of manager Louis van Gaal.

The Scotland captain has missed a lot of football in the last few years due to chronic illness. Keen to avoid more time being lost the game, the midfielder decided to move to West Brom in the January transfer window. In his first press conference as a West Brom player, Fletcher says that he moved to the hawthorns for regular game time.

Known as an ambitious midfielder, Fletcher says that he was simply not prepared to sit on the sidelines waiting for his chance at just United. Instead, he wants to help West Brom finish in the top half of the table. After the arrival of Tony Pulis, results have improved substantially and the threat of relegation has disappeared in the immediate moment. Still, Pulis has a lot of work to do in order to get to the magical 40 point mark that will assure safety. West Brom have been defeated only once in the last four matches. They take on Swansea at home in what could be Fletcher’s debut match.

“After everything I have been through, to not be playing was difficult for me. Fighting the illness was to keep playing football. I thought it would be at Manchester United but that’s not the case. It’s here now at West Brom. When I was fighting all those dark days, I was a young man and had worked all my life and dreamed of becoming a professional footballer and I didn’t want to give up on that too early. My kids [twins Jack and Tyler, now seven] were still young and hadn’t seen me play that much. All these things were driving me on,” said Fletcher.
